“Redundant” is a word that means “more than enough” or “repeated.” If I tell you to take your complaint to the “Department of Complaint Department” the second “Department” is obviously redundant. Who would ever talk like that? Well, in Romans 3, God does!
God’s redundancy is a wonderful redundancy. He repeats himself in a couple of different ways because he is talking to thick-headed sinners like you and me. He tells us we are all sinners. Then he tells us he has done everything that is needed to take our sins away. But because you and I are inclined to think that we can save ourselves, he stresses that he alone has saved us.
He says we are “justified freely by his grace.” The word “justified” means that we are declared not guilty of sin. What a great truth! Notice what God says next. We are justified “freely.” That means there is no cost to us. A straightforward statement. Then he piles on top of it the precious word, “grace.” “Grace” is a word that means “undeserved love.” If is undeserved, then we did not earn it. If we did not earn it, then it has to be free to us. God gets redundant so that we can be assured that heaven is open to us. There is no doubt God has done it all! Thank God he repeats this glorious truth to us again and again!
Romans 3:22-24 There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus
