Ways to support Afghan refugee assistance
October 18, 2021
|
|
|
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
No doubt you have heard about the refugees who have been brought into our country after 20 years of war in Afghanistan. Many of them have come with only the clothes on their backs. Imagine the stress of being suddenly removed from the only home you have ever known and entering a country whose language and culture are utterly foreign to you.
In Galatians 6:10 St. Paul encourages God’s people: "As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." The Afghan refugee situation presents us with a wonderful opportunity to reflect Christ’s compassion to people who are hurting and in need.
WELS members who are interested in helping Afghan refugees in the United States have several ways to be of assistance.
- If you want to donate toward their needs (food, clothing, shelter, vocational training, language training, etc.), please designate a gift to the general fund of WELS Christian Aid and Relief. You can donate by going to wels.net/CARgift or by sending a check to N16W23377 Stone Ridge Drive, Waukesha, WI 53188.
- If you want more information about sponsoring a family at your location, contact your local resettlement agency.
- If you are already involved with the resettlement of one or more families, contact Pastor Paul Prange, chairman of the WELS Joint Mission Council, to be connected to other WELS members who are doing the same thing (paul.prange@wels.net; 414-256-3236).
- If your congregation would like a grant to help with the resettlement of an Afghan refugee family in your community, contact Pastor Dan Sims, Director of Christian Aid and Relief, for the application form (daniel.sims@wels.net; 414-256-3204).
God bless your desire to share the love of Jesus with these families!
