People do all kinds of different things to gain attention. Some dress in a way that stands out from others. Others act out and get into trouble. Some pout to get attention. In many cases these people are starving for attention. They want to be noticed because they feel all alone.
Have you ever considered how completely unique God’s love for us truly is? It turns things upside down from the way we are used to thinking. We are the ones who are all alone. We should be doing all kinds of things to draw God’s attention to us. But sin makes it so that we do not see that we are alone. So God is the one who acts. He draws our attention to him.
In worship this week we focus on the Baptism of Jesus. At his Baptism Jesus began his public ministry. He began to teach and preach. God drew people’s attention to this event by a voice from heaven, a dove, and his statement of approval. But that should not surprise us. A thousand years earlier God already had called people’s attention to his anointed one in Psalm 2. God desperately wants us to know that he has acted to forgive our sins in Jesus.
Psalm 2 (selected verses)
“I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
I will proclaim the decree of the LORD:
He said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.”
