Acting on Overwhelming Gratitude

This week in worship we are called to act. God has overwhelmed those who believe in him with his uncommon mercy. That is the good news that is ours in Jesus! So, what are you going to do?

Read through this week’s Psalm of the Day, Psalm 145. David tells us of a number of things he plans to do. There is only one reason he gives for doing all these things: God is great! He details at length the greatness of God. He saves, He forgives. He is close to his people. He delivers them. He always knows what they are going through. The list goes on in the psalm

Let’s focus on two of the things he intends to do because of the greatness of God. He will tell others about who God is and what he has done. He will tell God over and over that he loves him deeply and intensely because of what God has done for him. He will do both these things in many ways. But one thing is certain: He never views these tasks as a burden. These are the ways he gives expression the thankfulness in his heart. He is not merely “thankful” as a condition or an emotion. It is not a state of being, like being cold, warm, or indifferent. The thankfulness that lives in his heart cannot stay there. It has to be shared. It has to be expressed. Thanksgiving is an action. That is the “giving” concept in the word. It cannot stay still. It has to act. David displayed his thankfulness in his actions. How will you give expression to your overwhelming gratitude to Jesus for saving you?

Psalm 145:3,8,9

Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
    his greatness no one can fathom.

One generation commends your works to another;
    they tell of your mighty acts.       18 The Lord is near to all who call on him,
             to all who call on him in truth.
       19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him;
            he hears their cry and saves them
